Celebrate freedom to read: Head to the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee to celebrate the 27th annual Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read today through Oct. 6.

At 2 p.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Tuesday, WNPL librarians will lead tours through the stacks of some of the hundreds of titles that have been banned or challenged over the past quarter century. Canvas book bag door prizes will be awarded in a drawing at each tour. Reservations are requested.

Free Kids Movie Matinee: Parents, caregivers and kids are invited to a free showing of the film "Charlotte's Web" at the Warren-Newport Public Library on the Columbus Day holiday, at 1 p.m. Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. This classic story, based on the book by E.B. White, tells the tale of Fern and her young pig Wilbur. Registration is not required and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dogs in the library: Dr. Christina Barcus from the Canine Center will discuss how to pick the right dog food for a pet in a free program for adults at 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Kids in kindergarten and older are invited to "How Dogs Help People" at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 with a service dog demonstration by Robin's Dog Stars. And at 2 p.m., Oct. 20, Save-a-Pet will present information on adoption and introduce some furry friends in need of a home. Pet supply donations will be welcomed at the library Monday to Oct. 20.

Teens events at the library: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities especially for them.

Special events to celebrate Teen Read Week, Oct. 14-20, include a Peeps Diorama Contest starting Monday, in which teens will create a shoe-box-sized scene using the marshmallow treats. For the first time ever, Dance Dance Revolution will be available at the library during an after hours teen Lock-In from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Teens must obtain a ticket after Monday and have parental permission to attend.

In addition, the TAG Team teen advisory group will meet at noon Oct. 6. The Teen Screen movie club will get together at 4 p.m. Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. to enjoy a free showing of "Shaolin Soccer," rated "PG." The next meeting of the Anime Club will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 18.

Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and non-fiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library, meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday.

Math tutors: The Warren-Newport Public Library hosts free volunteer math tutors who are Motorola professionals from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for drop-in help for fifth-grade through senior high school students.
