Every hospital needs hospice unit

I am compelled to write this letter because my husband recently passed away in a local hospital.

I was appalled at the lack of care he received during his last days of life. It wasn't until hospice was finally brought in 36 hours before he expired that the care and comfort measures needed were appropriately provided so that he could die with some dignity.

Because I am a retired R.N. from the late 1940s, born into a medical family, I find it difficult to understand in today's high-tech world of research why an in-hospice unit isn't provided in every accredited hospital? That would allow our elderly and terminally ill patients to receive the tender loving care and comfort measures needed before they expire.

I will be eternally grateful to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois and their wonderful staff for all of the comfort they have given me since my recent loss.
