Senior book discussion: Come to Ela Area Public Library to its next senior book discussion at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 24 when the group will discuss Mike Leonard's "The Ride of Our Lives."
The group meets at 9:30 a.m. the fourth Monday of each month at the library.

Driver refresher course: Representatives from AARP will present a driver refresher course from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25 and 27 at Ela Area Public Library. Designed for motorists age 50 and older, the course will cover defensive driving techniques, rules of the road, safety equipment and more.
Participants must pay a $10 fee and must attend both four-hour sessions to receive their certificates. Bring lunch. Refreshments will be provided. Graduates of the class may be eligible for a reduction in insurance from most auto insurance companies. To sign up, stop by the library.
Learning built to last: Students in third through fifth grade are invited to learn how to listen, read and study better and develop study skills most appropriate for their learning styles.
Presented by a tutor from Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services, the workshop will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Ela Area Public Library. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Tips to keep customers: Tom Lemanski of Vista Development will present the lecture, "Getting and Keeping Customers -- a Strategic Approach" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Ela Area Public Library.
Learn the four levels of customer interaction, why and when the customer is not always right and discover potential for getting and keeping customers more effectively. A free lunch will be served.
Living green: Ela Area Public Library will present the program, "Living the Green Life" from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26.
Carole Childers, owner of All Ways Healthy in Lake Zurich, will share tips for living green in all aspects of life. This program is free, but registration is required.
Understanding dyslexia: Lisa Stankus, director of Quentin Road Dyslexia Solutions, will present a brief overview of the latest brain research in dyslexia from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27 at Ela Area Public Library.
The program includes a review of the fallacies and facts about the impairment, what to look for and when, understanding and discovering the gifts of a dyslexic and future developments.
The presentation is free, but registration is required.
Stop in for a story: Ela Area Public Library offers stop-in stories for children of all ages.
These storytimes do not require advance registration and are available for children not enrolled in a registered storytime. An adult must accompany children under age 3.
Upcoming sessions will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 for Session I and Thursdays, Nov. 1 and 8 for Session II.

Back to School Freebies: As part of a National Library Card Sign-Up Campaign, the Ela Area Public Library will offer back to school incentives to children and teens during September. Stop by the Library on selected Sept. 28 and Spin the prize wheel when checking out more than 10 items.
Staff at the Circulation Desk will help patrons verify that they live in the district, or will refer them to the appropriate neighboring library district. To obtain a card, show two forms of identification, including something (such as a bill) verifying address. A signature from a parent or guardian is required for children under 18.
Cut phone bill costs: Consumer expert Kim Chan of the University of Illinois Extension Service will discuss ways to help reduce monthly phone bill charges from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Ela Area Public Library. Bring copies of phone bills and discover money-saving options and choices currently available. Registration is required.
Faces and places of China: World traveler Bill Helmuth will present this slide lecture to acquaint us with China's historical and cultural perspectives, art and architecture and religious traditions. Come to the Ela Area Public Library for this travelogue from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3. This program is free, but register in advance.
Play Group: Lap Tots Play Group, a drop-in program for babies and toddlers through 23 months, is held monthly at Ela Area Public Library. Designed especially for young children, the play group meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. Children must be with a caregiver. Toys and books will be provided. Fall Drop-in Craft: Ela Area Public Library's Children's Department will host a drop-in craft program from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 8. Participants will create a mini fall wreath. No registration is required. For more information, call the Children's Department, at (847) 438-3840.
