Boy Scouts invites kids to fishing derby

Young people in the community are invited to learn about the Boy Scouts of America while taking part in a day of fishing.

The Aptakisic District Hooked on Scouting fishing derby will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Big Bear Lake (entrance on Lakeview Parkway) in Vernon Hills. All youth who join that day will receive a fishing lure.

While fishing is the main focus of the event, there will be games for younger children and a model campsite. Fishing counselors will be on hand to conduct short clinics and lend a hand to those who would like help. Luke's of Mundelein restaurant will be on site to offer snacks and lunch for a nominal charge.

Scouting aims to promote the development of strong values and a healthy mind and body. Boys in first grade through age 10 can join Cub Scouts, a family and neighborhood-based program with emphasis on learning by having fun. Boys ages 11 to 17 become Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts. This program is based on developing leadership skills and centers on outdoor experiences such as hiking and camping. Boys and girls ages 14 to 21 can become Venturers. These older youth participate in high adventure/social/civic activities with the youth responsible for the planning, fundraising, etc.

A limited supply of fishing poles will be available for use for those who don't have their own. For details, visit www.hookedonscouting.org or call the Northeast Illinois Council, Boy Scouts of America at (847) 433-1969.
