Thanks for support of farmers market

The Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market would like to thank the residents of Sugar Grove, Prestbury, Elburn, Big Rock, Plano and the surrounding communities for their wonderful support of this year's fourth annual farmers market.

Our last market for this season will be on Saturday in the John Shields Elementary School parking lot. It will be our Harvest Market, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Once again, the Sugar Grove Park District will be on hand with pumpkins for the kids to paint and the town of Big Rock will be there, too, and give us a sneak peek at what they have in store this year for their Halloween Fest. We have also invited local businesses and not-for-profit groups to participate with no fee for their space. There will be door prizes, too.

We thank our farmers who have brought us wonderful fruits, vegetables, mushroom specialties, eggs, honey, pickles and beef and pork raised locally. We have a wonderful pie lady along with beautiful fall flowers, plants, pumpkins, corn stalks and decorations, and we thank those vendors too. Today, more than ever, it is so important to be aware of where your food is grown and to educate yourself about additives added to your food.

A special thank you goes to our very special clown volunteers JoJo and her assistant Tiny-T of the Sugar Grove Methodist Church Clown Ministry for providing the kids with face painting and balloons.

Remember to shop Sugar Grove and spend your money locally whenever you are able to. Go to the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce Web site: www.sugargrove chamber.org and see how many businesses we now have here in Sugar Grove. Make sure you check out the community calendar to find out about local events such as the farmers market or to list your own organizational event.

If you have not tried the Sugar Grove Farmers Market yet, please plan on attending and bring your family and friends. Show the farmers and vendors that you support the very hard work they do for us on a weekly basis by bringing their products to us here in Sugar Grove.

Only with your support will the Farmers Market continue to improve and bring not only the same great products to you next year, but many more new products too.

How third parties can effect change

Burt Constable told us correctly that a third party candidate cannot win this election ("Like victory in Iraq, 3rd-party president still distant dream", Sept. 13).

Yet the examples of third parties acting as spoilers in elections where they earn many votes is incorrect. Rather, their high vote totals come as a result of elections whose outcomes are already pretty certain.

There are two ways people in third parties can be effective in effecting change. They can organize themselves as a bloc and vote for one of the major parties, or they can attempt to split a major party on a big issue and replace it as a first or second party. Why don't Libertarians focus on one of these strategies rather than effectively removing themselves from political consideration by supporting a third party candidate?
