Thanks for help in rescuing turtle

I would like to thank the gentleman who assisted me on the morning of Sept. 10 in rescuing an injured turtle on Winfield Road, just south of Ferry Road in Warrenville.

I was heading south on Winfield, on my way to work, and saw a very large turtle with a broken back (shell) on the street, bleeding, in the far right lane, facing east. It would appear that it had wanted to cross all four lanes of very busy traffic, but it did not even get past the first lane.

It was a snapping turtle, and as its name suggests, it can snap and bite. Hard. I called into Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn, where I volunteer, and spoke with someone who could instruct us on how to handle the turtle safely.

The kind gentleman stopped his truck, got out, put on the gloves I gave him, picked up the turtle, and placed him/her in my car's trunk. I drove the injured turtle to Willowbrook Wildlife Center, where it will receive expert care from qualified staff.

Willowbrook cares for injured and orphaned wildlife. Once recovered, or grown, the animal or bird is released back into the wild. The center is also a wonderful source of education. Visiting public can view bald eagles, red fox, peregrine, woodchuck, turkey vultures and many more species up close.

Willowbrook is open to the public seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you or anyone you know encounters injured wildlife, please contact Willowbrook at (630) 942-6200.

Please drive safely and responsibly and please try to keep in mind that there are residents in this town that walk, fly and crawl slower than our fast moving vehicles. Thank you.
