Briefs: Welcome back for Paddock students

The Paddock School PTA is kicking off the year with its annual welcome-back party, Pantherfest, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Students, teachers and families will be treated to circus entertainers, carnival games, a 22-foot slide, obstacle course and moonwalk as part of this year's theme "Under the Big Top" on the grounds of the school, 225 W. Washington Court, Palatine.

Adding to the fun will be a disc jockey spinning favorite tunes. Glow-necklaces will be available for purchase, as will pre-ordered meals of hot dogs, chips and a drink.

Chin to speak on Parkinson's

Dr. Sam Chin, a Schaumburg chiropractor and acupuncturist, will speak at the September meeting of the Barrington Area Council on Aging's Parkinson's Disease Education Group. Chin will discuss his program with Parkinson's disease patients.

The meeting is scheduled from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Eastlake Dining Room at The Garlands of Barrington, 1000 Garlands Lane. The group is open to Parkinson's disease patients and their family members. For more information or to register, call Penny LeNeveu at (847) 381-5030.

Many fall programs at cancer center

Visit Wellness Place, a Palatine-based cancer resource center, and choose from a diverse lineup of healthy living and educational programs featured this fall.

• Learn about the philosophy of care, current trends and financial considerations of hospice as Elizabeth Stewart, registered nurse and director of education for Hospice of Northeastern Illinois presents "It's About Choice: Understanding the Hospice Benefit" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Stewart will offer tips about how to talk with doctors and families about hospice and pre-hospice care.

• At 7 p.m. Oct. 11, Jevelyn Verbic, registered nurse, from Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, presents "Humor, Health and Happiness." Verbic, who refers to herself as a "registered nut" and a "licensed clownician," will share her unique abilities to calm the spirit by sharing the gift of laughter during this light-hearted evening.

The free programs are open to everyone in the community. The center is at 1619 W. Colonial Parkway. To register, call (847) 221-2400.

Charity event for Bears Care group

Midtown Athletic Club, 1760 N. Hicks Road, Palatine, will hold a 5K Run and Walk to benefit Bears Care at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29. Former Chicago Bears players and team mascot Staley Da Bear are scheduled to attend. The group is a charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Bears.

After the 5K run and walk, which winds through the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve, participants and their families are invited into Midtown for a celebration and awards ceremony. There also will be a silent auction. More than 500 people participated in last year's event, which raised $20,000.
