Algonquin to host Kids Day events

On Saturday, communities worldwide will be participating in "Kids Day America/ International™." This is a special day dedicated to children's health, safety and environmental awareness in our community.

There will be hundreds of communities participating in the 13th year of this historic event, in which 3 million children have benefited in 2,000 cities.

Dr. Scott VanderWeit in Algonquin will be bringing this event to the Algonquin community from noon to 3 p.m. at the Brunswick Zone, 2075 Algonquin Road, Algonquin. Kids Day America (KDA) will support two not-for-profit organizations.

All proceeds will go toward the Fox Valley Children's Organization to spotlight its Buddy Baseball program that benefits handicap children throughout the community.

In addition, VanderWeit's office, 2407 W. Algonquin Road, and the event will serve as drop-off sites for used books and computers to benefit Island Relief, an organization in Crystal Lake that assists in the development of schools among island communities who have been devastated by hurricanes.

All children who participate in the event will be able to mini golf for free at the Brunswick Zone and receive special discounts on bowling.

There will be free games, face painting, balloons, food, special give-aways, prize drawings every half-hour and local karate and dance studios will perform.

The event will provide essential information on bike, car seat, Internet and child safety, in addition to dental and health screenings, crime prevention and environmental awareness.

"McGruff" The Crime Dog will make an appearance, as well as other characters. The fire department will bring a fire truck and will teach fire safety tips to the children.

Every child who attends will receive a special child ID card and the local law enforcement will be on hand to provide free fingerprinting, DNA kits and K-9 demonstrations for the children.
