Wauconda neighborhood evacuated during domestic dispute
A 36-year-old Wauconda man is in custody after reportedly barricading himself in his parent's garage, one day after a Lake County judge ordered him to say away from the house.
Bruce M. Gorney was charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass to a residence and resisting a police officer Monday. He is held in Lake County jail on a $150,000 bond.
Gorney was in bond court Monday morning facing charges of criminal trespass to a residence, unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence and resisting arrest, all stemming from a Sunday evening arrest.
Around 8:45 p.m. Monday, Gorney returned to his parent's house in the 100 block of Oaks Avenue and barricaded himself in a detached garage, Wauconda Police Sgt. John Thibault said.
Officers were unsuccessful in their attempts to communicate with Gorney, who refused to exit and indicated he had a weapon, Thibault said.
"We found a knife later on, but there was no indication he had threatened anyone with it," Thibault said.
The residence was surrounded and several nearby homes were evacuated, he said.
Over the next few hours, police attempted to make contact with Gorney and get him to surrender peacefully.
Around 1:30 a.m., the Tactical Response Team forced entry to the garage, using the sheriff's department's armored personnel carrier to break down the door.
Thibault said police used bean-bag rounds to subdue Gorney and take him into custody.
Gorney's parents and sister were home at the time. No one was hurt.
Thibault said he believes Gorney had been drinking.
