Trying to put 'unbelievable' into words

Rex Grossman had the correct response when asked to describe Devin Hester's running style."He's unbelievable," the Bears quarterback said after Sunday's 20-10 victory over the Chiefs.Well, yes. Yes he is. But that isn't exactly a description of how Hester zooms from Point A to Point B."I don't know how to describe it to someone who isn't there," Grossman admitted.Of course, Grossman doesn't make his living by putting things into words like some of us literary giants do. So allow me to share what I wrote down after Hester took a punt 73 yards for a second-quarter touchdown."Jiggle, wiggle and wag."That was it. Hester jiggles, wiggles and wags down the field like nobody else playing in the NFL today. So now you know how Hester does that thing he does so well. Oh, you don't? Then here's more from my trusty notepad:"Oops, there he goes again." #8230; "Showed them a leg and took it away with a skip and a jump." #8230; "Only guy who can fast-forward in real time" #8230; "Like a north wind just blew him south for the winter."There you have it. You don't have to watch Hester highlights for information. Just tune them in for entertainment purposes.Hester himself said, "I really don't like to look at the good things. I look at the negative plays to make them better."There weren't any on this day.Hester scored on that 73-yard punt return down the left sideline, set up a field goal with a 31-yard burst up the middle with another punt, and had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown nullified by a holding penalty."It really doesn't hit me until the end of the year," Hester said when asked whether he gasps like the rest of us at what he does.Maybe Hester is focusing on something else I had written down after his touchdown: "What took so long?"This was the Bears' second game of the season and Hester had gone more than 80 minutes of game time before breaking off a chunk of touchdown.Seriously, the guy looks like he could score every time a kick drops to him like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.Anyway, you want more in-game scribblings about Hester?OK, after his nullified 95-yarder I wrote that the worst possible thing an opposing coverage team ever will hear is the p.a. announcer say is, "Hester at the 5 #8230;"Remember, "He's unbelievable."Hester is so unbelievable that every time the ball is near him, the crowd begins to gasp as if he were another No. 23 launching himself from the free-throw line in a slam-dunk contest. It's enough to make you wonder a couple of things, the first of which is why a team like the Chiefs dared to kick to him."We did give thought to not kicking the ball to Hester," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said, pretty much leaving the question unanswered. Also, now that Hester is lining up on offense for a handful of plays a game, why hasn't he caught a pass yet this season?Grossman said, "We'll just keep adding plays to get him the ball in space and see what he can do."Heck, Rex, we already know what Hester can do: jiggle, wiggle and wag.mimrem@dailyherald.com
