Flood victims can get deeds from county

Owners of flood-damaged homes who are seeking financial assistance from McHenry County banks and lending institutions will need to show proof of ownership in order to secure loans. In many instances, certified copies of deeds may be the best form of proof of ownership.

"The recorder's office will be working closely with government officials and owners of flood-damaged homes to provide any necessary paperwork that has been recorded in our office," said McHenry County Recorder Phyllis K. Walters. "In an effort to ease their financial burden, we will provide this service at no cost to local home and business owners."

To obtain a free certified copy of the deed to their home, flood victims are encouraged to call the Recorders office at (815) 334-4110. These requests will be a top priority for staff and deeds will be mailed to the homeowner the same day.

"We are here to help, and providing copies of flood victims' deeds is the least we can do to assist their recovery efforts. We will help cut through the red tape any way we can," Walters said.

McHenry County military veterans in flood-damaged areas may qualify for additional programs. Veterans may contact the recorder's office to obtain a free certified copy of their Military discharge papers, commonly known as DD214s, for proof of military service.

Additional flood-related information is available on the McHenry County Web site at www.co.mchenry.il.us; or if you need details, call Walters at (815) 334-4109.
