Circus to raise big top in Glendale Heights

Elephants, horses, trapeze artists, clowns, camels, aerialists, lamas and ponies all are expected to make grand appearances in Glendale Heights this week.

The Kelly Miller Circus will conquer Camera Park, 101 E. Fullerton Ave., Wednesday and Thursday, with performances at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The circus will offer guided tours, the unveiling of animals who'll perform for viewers and acrobats and aerialists from around the world.

Glendale Heights' Special Events Commission and Historic Committee organized the event, and all proceeds will go toward the renovation of the village's historic house.

Rebecca Tybor, secretary to the mayor and the village board, said Glendale Heights hasn't had a circus visit in years. Officials brought the event so residents could enjoy an affordable entertainment.

"We were trying to think of something different to bring into the village that was exciting for families," Tybor said. "I think it's just exciting having a circus come to the town."

When the circus arrives at 9 a.m. Wednesday, 1,200 Queen Bee District 16 students will take a field trip to Camera Park and watch the elephants raise the big top for the circus.

"I think it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these children that have never seen a big top in their village," Tybor said. "I can't wait to see that myself."
