Moose Lodge to offer a day at the races

The Wauconda Moose Lodge indulges residents' need for speed for the ninth year this Sunday at the annual "A Day At The Races" car and race show.

"We have plenty of classic cars and we have plenty of race cars," said Don Ogren, who along with Don Kutinac, Lisa Keets and others organizes the event for the Moose Lodge.

This year, people can take a look at a top fuel dragster and mini-cups, smaller versions of Nextel Cup cars, among other auto offerings.

"It varies from year to year," Ogren said.

There will also be refreshments such as pop, beer, wine and food provided by JR's Broken Inn. Music will be by the Bart and Joey Alonzo Band and Pez and the Dispensers.

But the show isn't just for adults interested in race cars.

"We have plenty of things for the children," Ogren said, noting the fire department will bring an ambulance for kids to climb through.

The free event also boasts a virtual stock car race track, in its second year at the event.

"You actually get to race them around the track," Ogren said. "It's fun, even for adults."

At the day's start, breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon at a cost of $7 for adults and $3.50 for ages 12 and younger.

On display at the car show will be classic cars, motorcycles and, new this year, racing snowmobiles. Trophies will be awarded to the winning cars. During the day, NASCAR driver Brent Sherman will sign autographs.

Admission to the car show and the rest of the event is free, but Ogren says the Moose Lodge hopes people will buy raffle tickets to support Mooseheart, the charity the day raises money for. Otherwise, he encourages everyone to bring their finest classic or show cars to enter in competitions.

"The more, the better," he said. "Bring (your) classics out and spend the afternoon with us."
