Briefs: Third West Nile victim

A 41-year-old Hampshire woman became the third Kane County resident this year diagnosed with the West Nile virus, the Kane County Health Department said Friday. The other victims were a 29-year-old Geneva man and a 46-year-old Elburn woman. Six mosquito pools this summer have tested positive for the virus, three in Geneva, two in Batavia and one in Hampshire. One of the Geneva pools tested positive this week. Kane County reported four human cases last year. The potentially fatal West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.
