Golf outing to benefit Cody's Canteen
Fox Lake officials are calling on golfers to tee up for the second annual Cody's Canteen Golf Outing on Friday at Fox Lake Country Club.
The event, which kicks off at 11 a.m. at State Park and Grass Lake roads, is to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation in Chicago.
This year's goal is to raise $15,000 to $20,000 -- enough to grant wishes to three area children, organizer Allen Sturges said.
The event was named after his son, Cody, who died from a rare form of children's cancer called Neuroblastoma.
Sturges said the Make a Wish Foundation granted Cody a wish for the family, and it rang special in his heart.
"It's a wonderful organization that does amazing things for children," he said. "This event is one way of paying them back for all they do."
Originally scheduled for August, the golf outing was postponed due to the funeral for former Fox Lake police chief Ed Gerretsen, a major supporter.
In 2006, its inaugural year, it raised $16,000 for the foundation.
Cost of the event is $75. People who haven't pre-registered can sign up at 10 a.m. Friday at the golf club.
Giveaways and raffle prizes are planned throughout the day, Sturges said. Golfers can win a car from Ray Chevrolet in Fox Lake for a hole-in-one, and a boat from Fox Lake Harbor on a different hole-in-one.
A fundraiser, silent auction and raffle will be held at the Mineola Banquet hall on Cora Drive in Fox Lake. It will begin immediately following golf, about 5 p.m.
Silent auction items include two cruises to the Bahamas and a $3,000 set of custom golf clubs from Kis Country Club and Golf Academy in Gurnee.
Winners of the golf outing will also take home prizes.
