Hoedown to benefit the Heifer coalition

Heifer International's unique approach to assisting families for more than 60 years gives them reason to celebrate.

The organization is inviting the public to join its 2007 Heifer Hoedown from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton. Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $8 dollars for children ages 5 to 10, with a $55 maximum per family.

A barbecue dinner, silent auction, line dancing and a farmers market will be available for families. Games for children and adults will include a bean bag toss, basketball shootout and duck pond.

Fox Willow Pines will offer an exhibit featuring various plants. Proceeds from the sale of plants will help finance Heifer International's efforts.

Last year, the Heifer Hoedown celebrated with 300 people, even in the pouring rain.

"This year we're prepared for up to 500 people," said Loren Habegger of Heifer International.

Heifer International is an organization that provides people in Third World nations with resources to live. For instance, instead of giving someone food, the organizer might provide a cow that can produce milk, which can be used for nourishment and sold for income.

The recipient agrees to pass along any offspring to someone else in need to continue the chain.

"Depending on what's appropriate, the whole concept is to give families something that is sustainable," Habegger said.
