14 area semifinalists for Merit scholarships

Fourteens teens from area high schools made the semifinal cut in this year's National Merit Scholarship program, officials announced today.

These high school seniors are among 16,000 nationwide who will vie for one of 8,200 Merit scholarships, worth a total of $33 million.

The semifinalists emerged from a pool of 1.4 million juniors who took the exam last fall at 21,000 high schools across the country.

In Illinois, teens qualified by scoring at least a 218 out of 240 on the preliminary college entrance exam.

Area semifinalists include:

• Burlington Central: Erin A. Kelsey

• Crystal Lake Central: Alexander J. Alleavitch; Laura R. Catherwood; John D. Toole

• Crystal Lake South: Christopher M. Golden; Alison M. Schaefer

• Elgin Academy: Daniel J. Vecchiolla

• Elgin High: Margaret L. Hernon

• Huntley: Jacob C. Walker; Robert W. Wascher

• Larkin: John W. Rot; Paula J. Rusenovich

• Prairie Ridge: Robert M. Curtis

• St. Charles North: Patrick C. Eschenfeldt; Katharine K. Fragoso
