Fremd, Pinley happy with win over Hoffman

Fremd coach Curt Pinley has a lot to be happy about these days.

First, his Vikings recovered from Monday's loss to Lake Zurich with a 25-17, 25-17 Mid-Suburban West girls volleyball win over Hoffman Estates.

But even more, these two matches were Pinley's first since he returned from a trip to China with his wife to adopt daughter Rheann Menglin Pinley.

"It was an unbelievable experience," said Pinley. "It was hard, I had two weeks of practice with these guys and then a week before their first game I leave. Tonight felt a lot more comfortable."

In Tuesday's match, the Vikings (6-4, 2-1) displayed excellent ball control.

"I thought they played really well tonight," added Pinley, who now has logged 433 combined career wins in coaching boys and girls volleyball since 1992. "We stayed aggressive which I think is really important."

Leading the Fremd attack was Danielle Warner, who collected 7 kills off 12-of-13 serving at the net.

"It was fun -- it's only our second game with coach back," said Warner, who also added 4 digs. "I think we all did good today. This our third game now running 5-1. We're getting used to it but doing a good job with it."

In the second match, Fremd controlled much of the momentum. The service of Stephanie Alesia was paramount where she had runs of 10 and 7 serves, the second of which put the hosts up 23-11. For the match, Alesia was 20-of-20 with 6 aces.

Fremd put away the match with a kill by Bridget Morton (4 kills). Kaitlyn Pascus added 4 kills and 3 blocks while teammate Michelle Gonnella was 45-of-46 setting 15 assists.

The Hawks (3-10, 0-3) played two solid games but were plagued by scattered errors.

"This was definitely not our team at all," said Hoffman coach Dan Hutton. "We just got beat tonight. We've played much better matches before. There were a lot of unforced errors that we don't normally make."

Down by 12 in Game 2, Hoffman put together a run of its own on a string of serves by Ashley Chervinko (10-of-11, 2 aces) that included kills by Altrese Hawkins (4 kills) and Asia Everitt (2 kills).

Chervinko had 4 kills and 5 digs in the match. Sophomore Stephanie Schwarz was 27-of-28 setting with 6 assists. Becky Gilbert collected 7 digs and 5 assists for the Hawks.
