Prospect on right end of "surprising" margin

For the last two seasons, the fight for the girls swimming championship in the Mid-Suburban East division has been intense.

So intense that four of the six teams in the East have had meets decided by less than 5 points. In one meet, the teams finished with identical scores.

That wasn't quite the case in the East opener between Prospect and host Buffalo Grove on Tuesday afternoon.

Prospect won 10 of 12 events and went on to win by a sizable margin, 122-64.

"This is very surprising," said Prospect coach Dick Mortensen. "I was almost shocked as we went through the meet."

The Knights finished 1-2 in the 200 free behind Sarah Sohn (2:07.69) and Michelle Schueler (2:09.72); Molly Nordyke (26.61) and KC Dix (27.28) in the 50 free; and the backstroke behind Margaret Spacapan (1:05.57) and Dix (1:07.14)

The Bison won diving behind Christine Douthwaite (211.65) and Nicole Delaney in the 500 free (5:53.63).

"I can't argue with the score," said BG coach Tom Mroz. "Some events we only had two swimmers, not three. We have a lot of people sick. But we had events where there were good individual times."

One person who has proved to be invaluable to the Bison is freshman Angela Rodriguez, the sister of 500 free and 200 IM specialist Erin.

"I was kind of looking forward to her swimming with me," Angela Rodriguez said. "She's kind of an inspiration to me."

Angela's best events are the breaststroke and the fly. She also swims in relays.

"I think we did pretty good today," she said. "We've got a lot of second and third places, but Prospect was just better than us."

The highlight for Rodriguez was the fly, where she dropped seven seconds from her last meet.

"Angela had her personal best in all events," Mroz said. "Erica Brask beat her best time in the 50 and 100 free, Julia Work had her best time in the IM, and Rosie Fashing swam her best time ever in the 100 free."
