Sept. 11 remembrances

Several events are planned today in communities across Lake County to remember the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

They include:

Vernon Hills: The park district hosts its second Fields of Gold Planting at Century Hawthorn Park. In all, 2,300 schoolchildren are committed to planting daffodil bulbs. More than 1,000 kids will be on Aspen Drive area near the Family Aquatic Center at 9 a.m.

Lake Forest: The Lake Forest fire and police departments remembrance ceremony, 9 to 9:30 a.m., to commemorate fallen comrades on the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The ceremony will be in Market Square, off Western Avenue, north of Deerpath Road in Lake Forest. It is open to the public.

Libertyville: Libertyville High School hosts its annual 9/11 ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in front of the school at the flag pole, 708 W. Park Ave. The event includes the playing of the national anthem by the school's wind ensemble at 11:34 a.m. and a VFW gun salute at 11:36 a.m. Closing remarks are set at 11:53 a.m.

Mundelein: The Fort Hill Heritage Museum, 601 E. Noel Drive, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Videos, books and photos about the Sept. 11 attacks will be available for viewing. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call (847) 566-7743.

Waukegan: The Waukegan Exchange Club hosts its sixth annual Sept. 11 Remembrance Lunch at noon at the Bonnie Brook Golf Course clubhouse, 2800 N. Lewis Ave. Featured speakers will be Fire Chief Pat Gallagher and Police Chief William Biang. Colors will be presented by the Waukegan High School honor guard. Cost is $15, and reservations are required. Call (847) 244-7469 for more information or reservations.

At 2 p.m., the fire department hosts its annual Sept. 11 remembrance at Fireman's Park, 2115 Dover Road. Call (857) 623-6339 for information.
