Driver arrested in Bartlett wreck
A 32-year-old Streamwood man is facing several charges after an apparent drunken driving incident that left more than 75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the road and a crushed mailbox in its wake, police said.
Police said James W. Allred, of 101 Patricia Parkway, crashed into a 1996 Kenworth near the intersection of Route 59 and West Bartlett Road about 7:07 p.m. Friday, causing the fuel tank to rupture.
Police said Allred tried to drive away but was stopped when he hit a mailbox on the 120 block of Cheviot Drive, and he was taken into custody by Bartlett police.
Allred is charged with two felony counts of disorderly conduct and obstructing justice, driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run, failure to render aid and improper turn, Bartlett police said Saturday.
The truck was stopped eastbound on West Bartlett Road waiting to turn left onto Route 59 when police said Allred hit it with his 1999 Cadillac DeVille while trying to turn right onto West Bartlett Road from Route 59, police said.
Allred was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured, police said.
Part of West Bartlett Road was closed while crews cleaned the diesel fuel from the road, police said.
Allred was taken to Cook County jjail to await a bond hearing, police said.
