Prospect 27, Hoffman Estates 0

Pat Mack set the tone.

Then Prospect stayed in the running zone with Mason Pack and Tony Beyer.

Mack raced for 58 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown burst up the middle on the Knights opening drive before having to leave the game in the second quarter with a possible head-related injury.

But Pack and Beyer kept the Knights' rushing game heading forward.

Coupled with a solid passing attack, Prospect was able to blank visiting Hoffman Estates 27-0 Friday night at George Gattas Stadium.

"After losing Pat, I thought our other two kids (Pack and Beyer) did a great job stepping up," said Prospect coach Brent Pearlman. "They didn't get a ton of reps during the week but they came in and made things happen."

So did wide receiver Pat Ziegenfuss, who made a diving catch in the end zone for Prospect's second TD, collected 130 yards receiving and made a big interception to start the second half that led to the Knights' third touchdown.

"Pat had a great game," Pearlman said of the versatile senior who also kicked 3 extra points. "I'm really proud of the way he played."

Quarterback Miles Osei (9-for-17, 189 yards) tossed a 40-yard strike to Ziegenfuss late in the first half, and five plays later found him for the 5-yard TD toss.

"The routes were wide open and Miles was putting the balls right on me," Ziegenfuss said. "And the line (Eric Senft, Tim Scanlan, Nick Carlson, Mike Maratea and Matt Kennedy) gave us all the time ."

Pack, a junior, finished with 113 yards and his first multiple touchdown game (6-and 1-yard runs) while Beyer, a senior, gained 54.

"I give them credit," said Hoffman coach Bill Helzer. "They lost Mack and still went at us.

"I was proud of our effort but we made too many mistakes. Every time we were doing something right, we shot ourselves in the foot."

Hawks junior quarterback Frank Wadas threw for 87 yards and rushed for 65.

"We lost our safety Tom Dombrowski to a concussion in the first half," Helzer said. "David Ehlers (tipped away a possible TD pass) came in and did a real nice job.

"I was pleased with our defense. This was the best job we've done against Prospect in a while. But I've got to give Prospect credit. They picked up all our blitzes in the second half. We threw the kitchen sink at them but they responded."
