Naperville North 47, Glenbard East 6

Naperville North wasted little time in showing who was going to rule this DuPage Valley Conference football game against Glenbard East.

On the first play from scrimmage, running back Nick Mlady took the snap on a "bread-and-butter" play called "power" and rolled through the defense 57 yards for a touchdown just 20 seconds into the contest.

That was all the Huskies needed to get fired up as they rolled to a 47-6 victory over the host Rams in Lombard to improve their record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

"That is a great start to the game," said Mlady, who piled up 124 yards on 5 carries. "It gets everyone fired up and motivated. The line did a great job once again. We practiced well and were prepared for the game."

Mlady also powered it in again from 56 yards out in the third quarter. In addition Naperville North received rushing touchdowns from wing back Tom Costantino and fullback Tyrone Saunders, who knows how to throw around his 6-foot-2, 260-pound frame as a blocker and when he needs to grind out the tough yards.

"We did want to go in thinking that we could run the football and test them defensively," said Naperville North coach Larry McKeon. "We thought we could do some things offensively. Our front five and wings did a great job blocking for us."

McKeon felt that center Pete Dublinski, guard Eliot Ganet and tackles Dewey Henninger and Alex Helms did an exceptional job controlling the trenches.

It wasn't all a ground attack for the Huskies either. Quarterback Jordan Tassio was 11 of 14 with 147 yards passing, including a 24-yard touchdown strike to Costantino, who made a quick move across the middle. Tassio also scored on a 8-yard touchdown plunge.

"We did throw a lot more this week and have been (working on the passing game) more in practice," said Costantino, who had 7 catches for 104 yards. "Jordan played a great game. We saw the play open and we were able to beat the coverage. I was open."

Offensively, the Rams (1-2, 0-1) were held to 101 yards and managed 6 first downs. Their lone score came when Chris Kupka fell on a blocked punt in the end zone late in the battle. Naperville North, however, responded in a big way on the next play when Patrick Waite ran the kickoff back 93 yards for the score.

"(The Huskies) do what they do and they do it well," said Glenbard East coach Dennis Lueck. "I thought we played hard. Naperville North will go a long way."
