Leyden 33, Hinsdale South 27
The second-half explosion of offense from Hinsdale South and Leyden couldn't have been predicted. At halftime Leyden controlled a slim 6-point lead and it looked to be heading in the same direction for the next 24 minutes Friday night.
Both sides came out firing in the second half with Leyden (2-1, 1-0) eventually coming out on top with a dramatic 33-27 West Suburban Gold overtime victory in front of their home crowd in Northlake.
The Golden Eagles were lead senior running back Josh Serrano (22 carries, 139 yards), who scored once before halftime and on a 75-yard run early in the third quarter.
"Our offensive line was great tonight," said Serrano. "They helped make things happen out there and luckily we were able to come away with the win."
Hinsdale South (1-2, 0-1) didn't go down without a fight, though. Senior quarterback Gary Mayberry helped push the Hornets in the passing game and on the ground.
Hinsdale South also had a large contribution from senior running back Dan Hopp, who rushed for 132 yards.
Both teams traded five third-quarter touchdowns in less than five minutes. After a scoreless fourth quarter, the game would go to overtime tied at 27.
Hinsdale South won the coin toss and took the ball first but a strong defensive stand stopped Mayberry and the Hornets. The table was set for Serrano. After getting to the 2, Serrano took the ball up the middle for the score and the Leyden win.
"It was the same play we were working on all night but we just changed the formation," said Leyden coach Tom Cerasani. "We tell the kids to keep fighting and finally those words rang true for us."
