Fine Arts Fair to fill out weekend of giant garage sale

Twice a year, Hanover Park holds a mammoth community garage sale and flea market guaranteed to get its vendors plenty of foot traffic.

And now that school is back in session, it's time for the fall portion of Maxwell Street West.

The semiannual event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Metra commuter lot at Church and Lake streets.

Around 150 residents and merchants are expected to sell clothes, collectibles, athletic equipment, crafts and who-knows-what. Items in years past have ranged from huge statues of Frankenstein and the Grim Reaper to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trading cards.

Any unsold spaces will be sold at the gate the morning of the sale on a first-come, first-served basis. Spaces are 9 by 18 feet and cost $15 each. Vendors are limited to two. The sale of certain items is prohibited - so no live animals or weapons. Also, food can't be sold without the village's permission.

For more information or to get an application, contact the village clerk's office at (630) 372-4220.

Maxwell St., the day after: Maxwell Street West is just part of what's sure to be a full weekend for Hanover Park.

This time out, the semiannual event will coincide with the first-ever Ontarioville Fine Arts Fair. Local artists will display their work from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 on the other side of the train tracks at Jubilee Park on Ontarioville Road.

Happy 50th, Streamwood!: While Streamwood's recent Summer Celebration was probably the most public commemoration of the village's 50th birthday, an opportunity to celebrate this golden anniversary more formally arrives next week.

The village and its Community Relations Commission are inviting the public to their 50th anniversary dinner-dance, "A Cultural Affair," on Wednesday at The Seville, 700 Barrington Road, Streamwood.

A cash bar opens at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale for either $30 per person or $55 per couple. Orders must be placed by today, however.

For tickets or more information, call (630) 736-3802.

Clique for a cause: Clique Photography owners Mark and Kathy Shangraw will host the second annual Focus on Hope. It's a fundraiser for esophageal cancer research - a cause near and dear to their hearts after a friend succumbed to the disease.

The event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Bartlett Firebarn, 218 S. Main St.

The cost is $20 for adults, $5 for ages 6-20 and free for children age 5 and younger. Tickets include two drinks, hors d'oeuvres and a raffle ticket that could win items such as a $500 gift certificate to Clique Photography, winery tour and rounds of golf.

Local vendors, including those selling their products exclusively at home-based parties, will be on hand, too. Bark Avenue Day Camp, Dinner by Design, Natural Beauty, The Pampered Chef, Party Lite, Silpada Jewelry, Stampin' Up and Tastefully Simple are all scheduled to attend.
