Fest pays tribute to different cultures

Ethnic outfits, music, dances, instruments, foods and crafters will bring out the cultures of Glendale Heights residents Sunday.

Dozens of residents will gather at Camera Park from 1 to 5 p.m. for the sixth annual International Day, presented by the village of Glendale Heights.

Polish, Czech, Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian, Pakistani, Korean and Italian traditions will be represented.

This year, the festival is a week early because its original date would have occurred during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting that begins Thursday.

Chairperson Sohail Bari said because of the large Muslim community in Glendale Heights, and with many being involved in International Day, everyone decided to alter the schedule a bit.

"People cannot enjoy," Bari said. "They're hungry and thirsty."

There are a handful of new acts that did not appear at previous festivals.

Officials also are crossing their fingers and hoping rain will be out of the question Sunday afternoon.

"We hope to see more people and enjoy the event," he said. "Hopefully the weather will cooperate."
