Briefs: Police seek hit-run driver
Lake in the Hills police are seeking help in finding the driver who hit a 13-year-old boy and left the scene at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Algonquin and Lakewood roads. The boy was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin and his injuries were not life-threatening. Witnesses said a silver, four-door Saturn driven by an elderly woman with white hair and a flowered shirt was traveling west on Algonquin Road when she hit the boy. The woman got out of her car, checked the boy and then got back into and left the scene. Police ask anyone with information on this incident to call (847) 658-5676.
Power outage at Larkin
Larkin High School will be open today after a power outage shut down the school for several hours Wednesday evening, school officials said. The high school's annual parent night was canceled after a transformer malfunctioned and power went out at the school. ComEd crews were replacing the transformer Wednesday night after the 2 p.m. failure. Parents who were planning to attend the 7 p.m. event were notified by phone of the cancellation.
Safety check for seniors
The Elgin Township Triad will present its annual free vehicle safety check for Elgin area seniors between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Elgin Township building parking lot at 729 S. McLean Blvd. in Elgin. Elgin Community College automotive technology instructors and their students will conduct a 25-point safety check on the vehicles free of charge. No repairs or oil changes will be conducted and the safety check will take about 20 minutes. The time slots fill up fast each year and everyone must call for an appointment. Adopt a rubber duck
Sign up now for the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin's 9th annual rubber duck race. More than 15,000 rubber ducks are expected to float down the Fox River at 2 p.m. Sept. 8. You can "adopt" a duck every Saturday and Sunday in August at Jewel stores in Elgin and West Dundee. You can also order them online at www.elginducks.com. Each duck is $5. Duck race participants could win $1 million, a Chevy Aveo and other prizes.
