State's attorney now reviewing drowning

The office of McHenry County State's Attorney Louis Bianchi is investigating the weekend drowning of an 11-year-old Chicago girl in the swimming pool of a home in McHenry.

First Assistant State's Attorney Tom Carroll said Tuesday the state's attorney's office is reviewing information from McHenry police regarding the death Sunday of Tyrianna Jordan.

"No decision has been made," Carroll said. "We should come to something shortly -- whether there is or is not anything criminal."

McHenry Deputy Police Chief William Brogan said his department concluded its investigation Tuesday and no criminal charges had been filed.

"We did pass information along to the state's attorney's office, and we are reviewing all of our options with them," Brogan said.

Tyrianna, who would have turned 12 later this month, was visiting a home at 513 Stratford Court for a holiday barbecue and swimming with her aunt and cousins.

Police said Tyrianna, who could not swim, had been holding on to the edge of the pool when she lost her grip and slipped into the 8-foot-deep water.

Geneva Colles, who lives at the Stratford Court home with her husband, James, told the Daily Herald on Monday there were five adults at the party, but only her husband could swim.

Four children, including the victim, were in the pool at the time.

"My husband was in the pool with the children," Colles said Monday. "She tried to grab onto him, and they both went down under water. He almost drowned, too."

Police said an adult at the party called 911 and another screamed for help. Others tried to reach Tyrianna with a broom and other items, police said.

Colles said the 911 dispatcher told someone to jump into the pool, but Colles said no one could swim.

An off-duty McHenry police officer heard the screams from his garage and rushed to the scene to drag Tyrianna from the pool, police said.

The off-duty police officer began CPR immediately. Police said Tyrianna was unresponsive and estimate she was underwater for about four minutes.

McHenry County fire officers rushed her to Northern Illinois Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
