Grandmaster opens own chess school in Barrington

The Northwest suburbs are home to an International Grandmaster and the 2006 U.S. Open Chess Champion, who has established an award-winning chess school in Barrington.

St Mathew Lutheran Church, 24500 North Old Mchenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, has arranged with Grandmaster Yury Shulman to provide chess lessons for the community from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. on Thursdays every week starting Thursday at St. Mathew.

Studies done in several countries have suggested that learning chess improves concentration, memory, logical thinking, math and problem solving skills and develops emotional intelligence. Recent studies also document the role of cognitive exercises in keeping the mind fit and possibly preventing or delaying the onset of dementia.

The class is open to any beginning chess player ranging in age from 5 to 95.

For details, call Joan Eickelberg at (847) 438-8043 or Grandmaster Shulman at (312) 375-7475 for details.

A registration form is also available online at www.shulmanchess.com.
