Elgin bicyclist dies after being run over by car
An Elgin bicyclist died from his injuries after being run over by a car on State Street in Elgin Tuesday, police said.
Police said Douglas A. Stewart, 21, was riding his bicycle in the southbound turn lane of State Street just north of Lawrence Avenue when he tried to jump his bike onto the raised median and lost control around 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Elgin police said.
Stewart was struck by a Toyota driven by a 28-year-old Cary woman who was driving north on State Street, police said.
Stewart was doing jumps and hops with his bicycle before the crash when he fell on the street right in front of the Toyota and was run over, police said.
The driver of the Toyota and other witnesses stopped to help Stewart after the crash, but he was pronounced dead at Sherman Hospital, police said.
Currently, no charges are pending against the driver of the Toyota. The Kane County coroner's office will conduct a post-mortem exam Thursday.
