Barrington Fillies make Prospect wait

Prospect has had a strong history in its girls golf program but for the last three seasons, the Knights just haven't been able to topple undefeated Barrington in conference.

Prospect is going to have wait another year.

The Fillies are still on track to have another perfect run in the Mid-Suburban League after a 166-181 win over the Knights at par-35 Makray Memorial in Barrington.

"I am so proud of this group for the collective six of them for putting together a decent round today," said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck. "We haven't had our top six together for two weeks. Our mission was 110 percent from each of us."

McCall Barsamian stepped up with a 37 to pace the illness-stricken Fillies.

"It was good," Barsamian said. "I struggled, but somehow scored well."

Brittany Keiter, despite a case of mono, made it through her nine holes to card a 40. Taylor Quinn was also under the weather and still toughed out a 47.

"Brit, who's obviously really sick right now with mono -- she almost passed out out there, and she shot a 40. That's impressive," Barsamian said.

"Brittany and Taylor both showed a lot of guts for coming out today," Schoeck said. "Brittany has played two holes in the last week and a half, and Taylor I don't think has played any since last week. It was a phenomenal effort."

Amanda Schmitz (44) and Marina Karamans (45) both scored for Barrington.

Prospect had a good practice last week at Makray but couldn't carry it over to Tuesday's contest.

"We did not play well today," said Prospect coach Jim Hamann. "I'm proud of the way we prepared for it, we just didn't play well. We had a good game plan for the golf course.

"The kids came out here Friday and played great. But this is our highest round of the year. There's nothing I can do about it."

Megan Geraghty led the Knights with a 43 while sophomore Karly Grouwinkel added a 44.

"We're excited about Karly Grouwinkel's score today," Hamann said. "She's really coming along nice. This is her biggest match."

Marietta Smith (45), Melanie Walsh (49) and Alexa Campanile (49) stayed on pace for Prospect.

The Fillies and the Knights will have their rematch this Saturday, along with a host of other area teams, at the Waukegan Invitational hosted by Bonnie Brook.
