Wheaton North 42, Plainfield North 28
Wheaton North had an answer for everything Plainfield North did Friday night as the Falcons won their football game 42-28 in Wheaton.
Every time the Tigers (1-1) scored the Falcons responded by putting points up on the scoreboard moments later.
Take for instance when the Falcons (2-0) were leading 14-7 in the second quarter. Plainfield North's Jake Arnold scored on a 34-yard strike from quarterback Bryce Corrigan to tie the game 14-all, but within the minute, the Falcons' Mike Trumpy galloped 65 yards for a touchdown, putting them back up 7 points.
Then in the fourth quarter it was Arnold again scoring, cutting the lead to 27-21 but Wheaton North kickoff returner Jack DeAno ran the ball back 92 yards on the ensuing kickoff to once again take all momentum away from the Tigers.
"It was like a ping-pong match out there with all the momentum swings," Arnold said. "Every time we did something good and got ourselves back into the game, they went and made a bigger play. They were in control the whole time."
It wasn't just the offense stepping up for the Falcons in key situations. In the fourth quarter the defense intercepted two passes in the final five minutes of the game to take any chance for a comeback out of the question.
First it was Keith Maltese picking off a tipped pass with 4:46 remaining, and then Wade Cervenka finishing the game off with an interception with 2:41 that allowed the offense to run out the clock.
"This was a really crucial game for us because we proved to ourselves we can step up when we need to," DeAno said. "We never doubted ourselves out there, and we were never worried. We can stay in games with our offense, defense and special teams."
For the game Trumpy had 203 yards and 3 scores on 24 carries, while quarterback Eric Terrazas was 10 of 15 for 170 yards and 2 touchdown passes, both to Corey Thonn, who caught 4 balls for 111 yards.
"It's great to have Mike on our side," Terrazas said. "He is such a great runner and has tremendous vision. Our line did a great job opening up holes for us tonight."
Arnold finished the game with 57 yards rushing on 16 carries and caught a game-high 7 passes for 44 yards.
"We came out on the short end of the stick tonight, but we will be OK and get things going back in the right direction," Arnold said.
