Montini 33, Benet 0

Montini quarterback Tommy DiCristina started Friday night wanting to throw deep.

Benet had other plans.

That was no problem for DiCristina. The junior showed patience, threw short passes like darts, and little by little directed the Broncos to a 33-0 nonconference football triumph over host Benet before 3,000 at Benedictine University in Lisle.

"Usually we would throw deep, but since they were playing man-to-man coverage we had to hit the short passes because they were with (the receivers) all the way down the field," DiCristina said. "You take what they give.

"As long as we're moving the ball, there's nothing wrong with it. Our line did a great job today. They blocked. They got me my time back there for the passes."

DiCristina completed throws to eight receivers as the Broncos chipped away like sculptors in converting 16 of their 19 third-down situations.

Montini (2-0) produced leads that stood 7-0 after the first quarter, 13-0 at halftime and 19-0 after three quarters.

DiCristina wound up 23 of 33 with 160 yards and 3 touchdown passes. He also scored the game's first TD on a 1-yard sneak.

DiCristina's score capped a 14-play, 55-yard drive that was kept alive by a Benet penalty on a field-goal attempt.

Montini's next drive lasted 16 plays over 84 yards with DiCristina threading a 1-yard TD strike through two defenders to Brian Zirko.

That turned out to be more than enough offense for the Broncos, who pitched their first shutout of the season.

Montini snared 3 interceptions -- by Sean Cahill, Dan Stelter and Matt Sloan -- in the second half.

Garrett Goebel recorded 2 sacks, while Dan Grimes made 2 tackles for losses for the Broncos during a standout performance.

"We played a pretty complete game," Montini coach Chris Andriano said. "Our defense I thought did a great job in the second half. We bent in the first half, but I thought we played a very solid second half."

Benet (0-2) is still looking for its first points of the season.

"We had our chances to keep it close, but if we don't score points we're not going to win any ballgames," Redwings coach Gary Goforth said. "We just need to learn to take what they give us instead of trying to make things happen that aren't there."
