Briefs: Anti-gay shirt case in court

A Neuqua Valley High School student is once again asking a federal court to allow him to wear a "Be Happy, Not Gay" T-shirt to school. Attorneys for sophomore Alexander Nuxoll said the school is violating his right to free speech by not allowing him to wear an anti-gay shirt. Nuxoll and then-senior Heidi Zamecnik sued the district last spring over the shirts, but a judge ruled they violate the district's policy of teaching tolerance. However, attorneys believe a recent Supreme Court ruling will help their case this time.

Addison pool survey

Addison residents can give feedback through Sept. 9 about the future of their parks and swimming pool by completing a survey on the Addison Park District's Web site, www.addisonparkdistrict.org. The park district seeks feedback about several potential projects including replacing the outdoor swimming pool at Community Park, which will be closed to make way for the village of Addison's Town Center; building a new, outdoor swimming pool and aquatic center on district-owned land at Centennial Park; obtaining or leasing local open space to relocate two soccer fields that would be displaced by the potential Centennial Park aquatic center; and a possible property tax increase on the February 2008 ballot.
