Response team eases strain on firefighters

Any doubts over the effectiveness of Hanover Park's Citizen's Emergency Response Team program were erased big time this week following a Tuesday morning structure fire in Bartlett.

Members of the group responded to a two-alarm blaze at the Tuesday Morning store in the Bartlett Commons mall at Route 59 and Stearns Road. They helped cool the 85 firefighters from four departments who worked in 90-degree heat.

The team's on-scene mobile rehab unit has cooling chairs, which lower body temperature and reduce dehydration, cardiac output and changes in the body's electrolytes and chemical processes.

Bartlett Fire Protection District Fire Chief Kevin Heine was so impressed with the system that he called Hanover Park Village President Rodney Craig.

"I couldn't thank him enough," Heine said. "Our guys were really spent and this helped them to go back to work (later that day). Most times, guys are done."

Blaze can't close sports bar: Bannerman's Sports Grill, located next door to Tuesday Morning, managed to re-open around 7 p.m. despite the extensive smoke and water damage caused by the fire.

Owner Murray Friedman said an assortment of nearly 60 employees, cleaning people and maintenance providers helped make it happen.

Excluding the 74 TVs, which may have to be replaced, there was at least $20,000 worth of damage, he said.

Sept. 11 service in Bartlett: The Bartlett VFW and American Legion will lead a ceremony Sept. 11 to remember those who perished in the terrorist attacks.

The Bartlett police and fire departments will be honored and the Bartlett Adult Chorus will perform patriotic selections. There will also be a three-gun salute.

The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. at the Victory Centre retirement community, 1101 W. Bartlett Road, Bartlett. For details, call (630) 213-0100.

Golf by night: The Streamwood Park District will host an unusual golf tournament during the evening of Sept. 15 to benefit local teen programs.

The Twilight Golf Outing is held after dark using glow-in-the-dark golf balls, sticks and necklaces.

The event will begin with dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Streamwood Oaks Golf Course, 565 Madison St., Streamwood. There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 p.m.

The cost of the evening provides dinner, two free drinks, best ball golf, raffle prizes and awards. The tournament costs $50 per person or $175 for a team of four. Participants must be 21 years old. There will be a limit of 64 golfers, or 16 teams.

For details or to register, call (630) 372-PARK.

Tree pickup: Hanover Park Public Works has begun a curbside collection to clean the mess left by what Mayor Rodney Craig called a "10-year storm."

For the next couple of weeks, crews will be going throughout the village to pick up branches between 2 and 10 feet in length and less than 8 inches in diameter.

For details, call (630) 372-4440. Bartlett will keep to its regular brush pickup schedule.
