Positive opener for Jacobs

Jacobs senior striker Greg Pignataro is sick of losing.

So, Pignataro and the Golden Eagles plan on rectifying that situation in 2007.

The Golden Eagles got the season off on the right foot with a 4-2 boys soccer win over Prairie Ridge in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Algonquin Wednesday night.

"We lost 16 games last season by two goals or less," said Pignataro. "It was a very tough season. We were a little nervous early but once we calmed down we played very well. We played with a lot of confidence and had a good effort. It was good to start the season with a win."

Jacobs, which didn't have a shot on goal during the first 10 minutes, got on the scoreboard 14 minutes into the game. Senior Danny Scheuer scored first for the Golden Eagles off a well-executed corner kick from Mark Kyszka.

The Wolves (0-2) got on the board when Taylor Wegryzyn blasted a shot past Jacobs goalie Danny Trevor to knot the score at 1-1 with 13 minutes left in the first half.

Jacobs controlled the rest of the game, scoring 3 unanswered goals. Pignataro gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with 6 minutes remaining in the first half. Jacobs led 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Jacobs extended its lead on an own goal and a score by Kyszka.

PR's Alex Sauciuc scored the game's final goal with 35 seconds left in the match.

Jacobs outshot the Wolves 11-6.

"We were very nervous at the beginning of the game," said Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo. "We panicked during the first 10 minutes and made some dead ball mistakes. But once we settled down we played well. For a first game, I was very pleased with the effort."

Trevor had 4 saves for the Golden Eagles while A. J. Sturm garnered 4 saves and Elkan Meyer registered 3 saves while splitting time in the nets for Prairie Ridge.

"We just didn't play very well," said Prairie Ridge coach Dave O' Leary. "We wanted to play the ball diagonally and Jacobs wouldn't let us do that. We just didn't play the ball where we wanted to play it. But we will be all right. All the mistakes are correctable."
