Hike Lake County: Join the Lake County Forest Preserves and Lake Forest Hospital for the annual Hike Lake County challenge.

Now in its ninth year, the Hike Lake County program challenges walkers to hike seven of 12 designated forest preserve trails through Nov. 30 and record them in an official Hike Lake County Travel Log.

Logs are available online or at several Lake County locations. Receive a free commemorative shield for a walking stick upon completion of the program.

This year's program offers several new features. Canine companions who complete the program with their owner can earn a commemorative dog tag (up to three dogs). Owners can also buy an optional Hike Lake County dog collar to hang it on. Dog collars cost $5 each.

A new Hike Lake County Web site, www.lcfpd.org/hlc, offers program updates, a downloadable travel log, Hike Lake County trail maps and walking tips from Lake Forest Hospital. Travel logs also are available for pick up at select forest preserve locations and at two Lake Forest Hospital facilities.

For more information, call (847) 367-6640.

Lake Forest Hospital also has added a new feature to the program. From 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20, a physical therapist from Lake Forest Hospital will examine participants' strength, flexibility, foot structure and gait pattern and provide a personalized exercise plan to streamline their stride. The screening takes 15 minutes and includes a lecture titled "Principles for Preventing Walking Injuries."

All ages are invited. A reservation is required for the screenings and can be made by calling Lake Forest Hospital at (847) 535-8063.

For information about health benefits and issues related to walking, call the Lake Forest Hospital Sports Medicine Department at (847) 535-7550, or visit them online at www.lakeforesthospital.com.
