Cougars, Flyers both win

Trevor Cahill contributed his 10th quality start in 13 outings to become a 10-game winner, as the Kane County Cougars cruised to a 5-1 win Saturday night over the Clinton LumberKings at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva.

Alex Valdez smashed a pair of doubles and drove in 2 runs to lead the offense, as the Cougars won their fourth in a row, sixth of seven and 22nd of their last 31. The Cougars (32-27) are 16-7 in August.

Cahill (10-4), who became the 25th Cougar in franchise history to reach the 10-win plateau, had a 1-hit shutout through 4 innings. He gave up his only run in the fifth, ending a consecutive scoreless innings streak at 26½. The 19-year-old gave up 2 hits, walked three and fanned seven, improving to 6-0 in his last 8 starts.

Flyers 5, T-Bones 1: Right-hander Dan Grybash (9-5) went 7 innings, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits, to lead the Schaumburg Flyers to a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones at Alexian Field.

Grybash (9-5) matched his season high with 10 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Jake Toohey and James Morrison combined for 2 perfect innings of relief for the Flyers (18-22, 38-50) against the T-Bones (23-17, 41-47).

The Flyers' Mike Rohde, Jimmy Hurst (2 RBI), Billy Malone, Alex Fonseca and Alex Derhak each had 2 hits.
