Mount Prospect apartment heavily damaged by fire

Fire destroyed a Mount Prospect apartment Saturday morning, officials said.

Mount Prospect firefighters were called to 1713 Chariot Court at 8:33 a.m. and found fire coming from the second floor when they arrived six minutes later, officials said.

Firefighters were able to get the fire, which started in the living room of the unit, under control in about 15 minutes. No one was in the apartment when the fire started; other residents of the six-unit building were able to evacuate when they heard smoke detectors going off, fire officials said. No one was injured.

The fire-damaged apartment is uninhabitable, officials said, but residents could return to the others.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The apartment building did have electricity at the time, officials said.

Des Plaines, Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Township fire departments assisted with the blaze.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
