Relief efforts continue around the Fox Valley

Emergency personnel and local officials are standing by today in the northern Fox Valley to help residents affected by Thursday's storms and ongoing flooding.

Officials in some areas are also looking for volunteers to help with sandbagging and cleanup efforts.

In Kane County, residents in need of sandbags can call the county's office of emergency management at (630) 208 8911.

Sand piles -- without bags -- are available at five locations:

•The Haeger Factory Store on Van Buren Street, two blocks south of Route 72, in East Dundee;

•The Dundee Township Highway garage, 1900 Sleepy Hollow Road, West Dundee;

•The South Elgin Public Works facility, 735 N. Martin Drive;

•Lions Park on the east side of the river a few blocks south of the bridge in South Elgin;

•And the St. Charles public works facility, 1405 S. 7th Ave.

In Elgin, the city's public works department is filling sandbags for resident pickup at 1900 Holmes Road. Residents will be able to pick up bags from 7 a.m. to noon today. There is a limit of 30 bags per pickup.

In McHenry County, sandbags are available at three locations in Algonquin:

•Cornish Park, at Route 62 and Harrison Street;

•Riverfront Park, 201 N. Harrison St.;

•And the Algonquin public works facility, 110 Meyer Drive.

If you would like to volunteer with sandbagging efforts today and Saturday in West Dundee, call village hall at (847)551-3800.

South Elgin officials said that students from South Elgin High School will volunteer if additional help is needed. But the kids will need signed release forms.
