Kirkland-Hiawatha at Wheaton Academy

Nonconference

Game time: 7:30 p.m., today, at West Chicago High School.

Last year: Wheaton Academy 18, Kirkland-Hiawatha 16 (junior varsity).

Outlook: Storming in for Wheaton Academy's first varsity football game in 18 years, Class 1A Hiawatha's football enrollment of 211 is the 21st lowest among IHSA members. The independent Hawks, 1-8 last season, haven't had a playoff game since 1987. (Wheaton Academy coach Ben Wilson said the Warriors will open with Momence in 2008.) Wheaton Academy's JV win last year was highlighted by Anthony Ritchie's 70-yard punt return for a touchdown and safety Jake Jones' interception with 20 seconds left to ice it. Though quarterback Brian Pell ran for 2 touchdowns, this year Wilson unleashes a spread offense that will allow Pell more chances to throw.

Next week: Kirkland-Hiawatha at Luther North; Wheaton Academy at Genoa-Kingston.
