Football preview: Bolingbrook at Downers Grove South

Outlook: One of the area's better openers, Bolingbrook comes into tonight's game ranked seventh in the Associated Press' Class 8A state poll. Downers South is close behind at No. 9. The Raiders again have a standout running back in Erik Smith, who is verbally committed to Wisconsin. He'll face a stiff test against a Downers South defense returning six starters, including three third-year starters -- lineman Ben Apland, linebacker Jared Culver and cornerback Tyler West. Offensively, junior Scottie Williams is one of five returning starters after rushing for 800 yards last year. Sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer, a transfer from Georgia, makes his debut behind center. With only one returning starter on the line, tackle Steve Grybas, protection is an obvious key.
