Ditka mixes charity work with criticism

Former Bears coach Mike Ditka brought together his charity work and harsh criticism of the NFL on Thursday, announcing a golf tourney in Long Grove and autograph show in Itasca to raise money for former players in need of assistance.

Flanked by former players, Ditka lashed out at the NFL for doing too little to help players whom he said helped build the league. He said the events will raise money for the former players, and he also presented a $50,000 check to Misericordia, a residential facility he has long supported for people with disabilities.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell are working actively on the issue. He pointed to a program launched recently by the league and the union that includes a $7 million medical fund.

Ditka was joined by Hall of Famers Ted Hendricks and Dan Hampton, former Pro Bowler Jim Covert and former quarterback Bobby Douglass.

These players and nearly 40 other Hall of Famers will take part Sunday in a day-long autograph signing at the Westin Chicago Northwest Hotel, 400 Park Blvd., Itasca.

Fans are allowed to bring in items for autographs, and footballs and helmets can be purchased there. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $10 (children 12 and younger are free). There is a charge for all autographs. Player schedules are at www.midamericasports.com.

On Monday, the Mike Ditka Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Classic will be held at the Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove. The private tourney will tee off at 10 a.m.
