Police department seeks approval of peer agency

A team of assessors from the Fairfax, Va.-based Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA, arrived in Hanover Park earlier this week to take a thorough look at the Hanover Park Police Department.

CALEA is examining all aspects of the department's policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. Three out-of-state law enforcement practitioners will review documents, conduct interviews and visit officers and other places where compliance can be witnessed.

The voluntary process is a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in the law enforcement field.

To gain accredited status, Hanover Park police have to comply with 446 standards in areas including traffic operations; prisoner and court-related activities; relationships with other agencies; and organization, management and administration.

Residents can still comment on the department's ability to meet the standards for accreditation by writing to: CALEA, 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2215. For more information, call CALEA at (800) 368-3757.

Bardales is one of about 100 individuals in the state honored as part of National Nursing Home Week. He received a certificate of recognition.
