Car show on Sunday to benefit children's group

The Woodfield Area Children's Organization will present its seventh annual Charity Car Show from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at The Alumni Club, 871 E. Algonquin Road in Schaumburg.

Registration will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. There's an entry fee of $20.

The top 40 cars will receive extra large trophies. Trophies will be awarded for all makes and models. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome to enter.

There will be 2-foot-tall trophies with clocks awarded for both the Best of Show and Mayor's Choice winners.

A specially priced outdoor barbecue will be offered by The Alumni Club during the event.

Free hats will be given to the first 100 vehicles registered. The event will include music, prizes and raffles.

In case of rain, the event will take place Sept. 9.

Septemberfest shuttles: With Septemberfest only a week away, regular attendees should be aware that construction at Conant and Schaumburg high schools has limited the usual amount of parking there. Fair-goers can catch a shuttle to the fair in the lots.

The situation is more significant at Schaumburg High School, where between a quarter and a third of the usual amount of parking is being lost this year.

Parking at Schaumburg High School still will be available on the west side of the building, but in only the southernmost row of parking stalls along Schaumburg Road in front of the building.

Richard Bascomb, Schaumburg's senior transportation planner, suggests riders consider some of the neighborhood-oriented shuttle routes. Route 1 runs from Knollwood/Bode, route 2 from Weathersfield Way, route 3 from Wise Road, route 4 from Thacker Street and route 6 from east of the Meacham/Schaumburg Road neighborhoods.

Routes 1 and 3 will have an additional bus on each route this year, while routes 2 and 4 will have up to three buses running so that faster service can be expected than in years past.

Route 5 from the Schaumburg High School parking lot normally contributes about half the 44,000 rides the shuttles receive each year, so the village hopes many who normally use this route will try a different one this year.

Join the force:ΠThe Schaumburg Police Department is now accepting applications for this fall's Citizen Police Academy.

The first session is on Sept. 26 and will run for 12 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Every facet of the police department will be open to participants, from learning how investigations are conducted to having the chance to shoot on the gun range.

The academy is intended to both tie into the department's community policing philosophy and to remove the mystique of police operations, which are often distorted and glamorized by TV and movie depictions, Acting Sgt. John Nebl said.

To register for this fall's academy, either visit the police department section of the village Web site at www.villageofschaumburg.com or call Nebl at (847) 348-7276.

The academy is open to anyone 18 years old or older who either lives or works in Schaumburg.
