Briefs: Man guilty of sex assault of minors

A Carpentersville man faces a minimum of 58 years in prison since being convicted Thursday of sexually assaulting two children from 2003 to 2005. Mark Kimbrough, 39, of the 500 block of Elm Ridge Road, was found guilty by a Kane County jury of seven counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, eight counts of criminal sexual assault, and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Kimbrough has been in the Kane County Jail on $50,000 bond since his arrest Nov. 9, 2005. He will be sentenced Oct. 31.

Gun gets teen probation

A Carpentersville youth this week was sentenced to two years probation for bringing an unloaded gun to Dundee-Crown High School in September 2006 when he was 16. Judge Timothy Sheldon told Ivan Unzeta, now 17, of the 200 block of Harrison Street, that he was giving him a chance, ordered Unzeta to earn his General Educational Development degree and maintain employment. Unzeta pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school, a felony, on March 14. Unzeta was expelled from District 300 schools for two years.

Seven apply for board seat

Seven candidates have applied to fill the vacancy on the St. Charles school board left by the resignation of Chris Hansen on July 25. The appointment will last until spring 2009. The board plans to meet in open session Monday to review applications, develop interview questions and decide how many applicants to screen. Interviews will take place in open session later next week, with the appointment of a new member shortly thereafter, officials said. Applicants must be registered to vote and have lived in District 303 for at least one year. The district includes St. Charles and parts of South Elgin, West Chicago, Wayne and Campton Hills.

Septic, well alert in Kane

Local water supplies can become contaminated because of flooding. The county health department warns that if the safety of your water supply is in doubt, use bottled water for drinking, preparing food, making ice, washing hands and dishes, brushing teeth and preparing baby formula. If there is standing sewage in your yard, rope off the area for at least a week after the water has receded and keep children and pets away from that area. Household water use should be minimized if your septic system is flooded. The department will test wells suspected of being contaminated for free. Afterschool fair Saturday

The Northern Fox Valley AfterSchool Network will host the second annual "AfterSchool and Beyond Resource Fair" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Kids Safety Day on tap

Kane County Safe Kids Safety Day will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Mooseheart Field House, on Mooseheart Road west of Route 31 between North Aurora and Batavia. Safety Day has exciting fire and rescue demonstrations, kids can touch fire trucks and police cars. Kids learn how to stay safe around prescription drugs, railroad tracks, domestic and wild animals, school buses, power tools, electrical equipment and construction sites. Call (630) 966-2254.
