Doggoned good use of the park pools

In an Aug. 18 editorial, the Daily Herald asks why anyone would think that dog swims at the park district pools were a good idea. These dog swims have been scheduled during the last couple of hours before the pools are closed for the season. The pools are then closed and drained for the season. The intent is to use these public facilities to their greatest benefit, by allowing residents to treat their dogs to a safe swim, once a year, for a couple of hours. This, after the public had finished using the pools.

After its inaugural year, the originators of the program, the Bloomingdale Park District, won the national award for innovative programs! So quite a few people versed in serving the public must have thought it was not only a good idea, but, in fact, the best.

We have attended these swims for many years and have found them fully staffed, safe, and highly attended. We also applaud the originators for including the multitude of dog owners in park district usage of facilities, in a safe and enjoyable manner.

What a shame that this wonderful, innovative, and award-winning program must be scrapped, because running scared has become the norm.
