Global warming meeting

Elgin's Slow Global Warming will meet at 6:30 p.m. today on the second floor of Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Group members plan to discuss actual steps you can take to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It's also a chance to get to know fellow environmentally conscious people who are working on the issue locally and nationally. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of every month.

Join Elgin police academy

The Elgin Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy, an eight-week training course from 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5. Topics will include search and seizure, traffic enforcement, tactical response, shooting on the department's firing range, gang and drug investigations and more. Applications are available at the department, or online at www.cityofelgin.org. Call Christy Schmidt at (847) 289-2588. You must be 18 to apply, and the deadline is Sept. 10.

Superintendent to retire

Crystal Lake District 47 Superintendent Ron Miller has announced he will retire at the end of the 2008-09 school year. Miller has served the district for 31 years, the past five as superintendent. The school board will work with the Illinois Association of School Boards to decide on a selection process and timeframe to choose Miller's successor. The board plans to consider qualified internal candidates before launching an external search. After joining the district in the finance office, Miller became the director of finance in 1982. He then served as assistant superintendent of finance for 15 years before becoming superintendent.
