Itasca man charged with DUI after collision

An early Tuesday morning crash in Itasca has landed a Lake Zurich man in the hospital and an Itasca man behind bars.

According to Itasca police, two vehicles were traveling south about 4 a.m. on Prospect Avenue, just south of Industrial Drive.

Deputy Police Chief Bob O'Connor said a 2001 Honda, driven by 32-year-old Itasca resident Jatinder Sidhu, plowed into the back of a 2002 Dodge driven by an unidentified 58-year-old Lake Zurich man.

O'Connor said the injured man's name was being withheld by police until family members could be notified that he was at the hospital. Fire district officials said his name wasn't available Tuesday afternoon.

"Our victim told us he just looked up and suddenly saw lights approaching on him at a high rate of speed," O'Connor said. "At that point, it was too late for him to do anything."

O'Connor said Prospect Avenue was closed until about 11 a.m. as investigators re-created the accident scene. The initial cause of the crash was the driver's failure to reduce speed prior to the crash and alcohol, O'Connor said.

Firefighters took the Lake Zurich man to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where police said he was being treated for spleen injuries.

Sidhu has been charged with two felony counts of driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily harm and one count of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was processed at the Itasca police facility and transported to the DuPage County jail, where he was awaiting a bond hearing.
