Chief was epitome of integrity, honor

On Thursday, the Fox Lake community laid to rest one of its finest sons. Chief Edward Gerretsen was, in the purest sense, the true meaning of the words integrity, honor, and pride. If you were lucky enough to be his friend, you had to love him. If, by chance, you were an adversary, you had to respect him.

He had a flair for life that few people can claim, and a smile that would light any room he would enter. He always had time for children and seniors, or if you just wanted to stop by and "shoot the breeze" for half an hour, his door was open. He was a tremendous leader that would unselfishly pass the credit for the accomplishments on to his officers and staff. He loved the Cubbies and never missed a Bear game (even in those Bad years.) Against the advice of his doctors, he insisted on participating in the Polar Plunge, although he couldn't swim a lick and was leery of the water.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to call him friend. He will be sorely missed by many and his memory will forever live on.
